Women’s Health Research Collective
WHRC
We bring researchers and participants together across women’s health, making opportunities easier to find, understand, and take part in.
For women and anyone impacted by women’s health, including trans and non-binary people.
Who we are
The Women’s Health Research Collective (WHRC) was founded by Dr Hazel Wallace, following conversations with research peers and friends, Bríd Ní Dhonnabháin and Dr Stephanie Shroot, about the persistent gaps in women’s health, from underrepresentation in research to the challenges many face in accessing evidence-based care and information.
Despite women making up half the population, only around 5% of global research funding is allocated to women’s health. Women also remain underrepresented in clinical trials, with fewer than 30% of participants in some early-stage studies.
While this gap exists for multiple reasons, including the historical exclusion of women from research due to safety concerns, the complexity of hormonal variation, and a longstanding tendency to generalise findings from male-dominated studies, one barrier we repeatedly noticed was a disconnect between researchers and participants. Researchers struggle to recruit enough participants to important women’s health studies, while many women are willing to take part but do not know where to start.
The Women’s Health Research Collective was created to bridge this gap and improve access to research for both researchers and participants.
What we do
We act as a bridge between researchers and participants.
For participants: we share a monthly round-up of ethically approved women’s health studies through our newsletter, making it easier to explore opportunities and choose which studies to take part in.
For researchers, we offer the opportunity to have their study featured on the platform. We focus on women’s health research, and only advertise studies that meet our eligibility and ethical criteria.
By improving access on both sides, we aim to increase participation, support recruitment, and help ensure research better reflects real-world experiences.
